In part: “What really drove me out of Ladywood was the fear of having to abandon my work before it was finished. If I had been defeated in Ladywood, and had not had another Birmingham Seat to go to, I should have had to retire from political life, for I could not have brought myself to seek a Seat elsewhere than in my own city.” Chamberlain also adds a brief handwritten postscript.
