Snodgrass, Mark Strand (ALS), Diane Wakowski, and Richard Wilbur. Merrill’s letter, in part: “In my ‘formative years’ many writers I still admire helped me to arrive at a style: Proust, Pope, Elizabeth Bishop, etc.” Wilbur’s letter, in part: “No one reading my poems would guess, I suppose, that I have always taken delight in William Carlos Williams, or that I am fond of European Dada and Surrealist art.” Most other letters contain similarly interesting literary content.
