DS, signed “Prince R. Nelson,” one page, 8.25 x 11.75, no date. Prince applies for an early 1989 visa to enter Japan for a two and a half week tour of the country. The application is filled out in type, identifying his profession as “Entertainer,” and stating the purpose of the journey as “Entertainment Tour,” with a probable entry date of January 29, 1989. Signed at the conclusion in ballpoint with his full, legal signature. Accompanied by a one-page typed itinerary listing Prince’s corresponding concerts from January 29 to February 14, 1989. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds (one through a single letter of signature), scattered creases and wrinkles, and small tears and staple hole to top edge.
Prince was hesitant to leave the solitude of Minnesota to embark on this Japanese leg of his Lovesexy World Tour—the final concert tour of the 1980s. The US portion of the tour was marked by lower than expected ticket sales, prompting Prince to consider canceling this Japanese tour in order to concentrate on the film Graffiti Bridge. Threats over a breach of contract lawsuit persuaded the artist to continue, which ultimately turned out to be a financial bust due to high production costs for its elaborate staging and props including a fountain, trellis fences, and a Ford Thunderbird. A seldom-encountered full signature from one of the 1980s most influential musicians. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RR Auction COA.
