His mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, ‘The Breakers,’ is among the largest and most lavish private residences ever constructed. Manuscript DS, signed “C. Vanderbilt,” one page, 7.75 x 9, July 1828. Itemized bill to Vanderbilt from James Gordon for boards, carpenters, a mason, and mules totalling $143.21, signed at the bottom by Vanderbilt, and also signed at the conclusion by Gordon indicating the bill was paid in full.
