American soldier and statesman (1821–1875) who served as a general in the Civil War and as the last Confederate secretary of war. Hand-addressed free frank, 5 x 3, addressed by Breckinridge to “M. D. Phillips, Esq., Henrietta, N. Y.,” and franked in the upper right, “J. C. Breckinridge, MC.” Panel also bears Rochester and Washington postmarks.
