Mary Ellen Pleasant

Entrepreneur (1814–1904) who was a busy figure in the Underground Railroad and helped many slaves make their way to freedom in the north. The Abolitionist used an inheritance from her husband to fund the cause of black freedom and to amass a $30 million fortune in stocks and real estate. Bank check, 8 x 2.75, filled out in another hand and signed by Pleasant, “M. E. Pleasant,” payable to S. Van Vliet for $435.00, February 17, 1876. In very good condition, with several vertical creases, one through a single letter of signature, cancellation cut to body, stamps to reverse, and some scattered toning and soiling. RR Auction COA.
