Dahlgren,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7.75, US Navy letterhead, January 8, 1869. Letter to a gentleman. In part: “After some uncertain answers I asked the Secretary to day—he demurs to granting my request that you should be ordered here, because Congress had abolished the office of the Assistant, and ordering you might seem to be a contravention of the Congressional action.” In fine condition, with noticeable vertical and horizontal folds.
