John B. Floyd

Confederate general and politician (1806–1863) who served as secretary of war under President Buchanan, the 31st governor of Virginia, and lost the crucial Battle of Fort Donelson. Partly-printed DS one page, 7.75 x 9.75, January 30, 1860. Document sent to Ames Stickney of New York to notify him that “the President of the United States has this day conditionally appointed you a Cadet in the service of the United States.” In very good condition, with partial edge separations to horizontal folds. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait of Floyd. RR Auction COA.
