American general in the Revolutionary War and a delegate in the Continental Congress. Sullivan served as a major general in the Continental Army and as governor (or president) of New Hampshire. He is most famous for leading the Sullivan Expedition in 1779, a scorched earth campaign against the Iroquois towns that had taken up arms against the American revolutionaries. Revolutionary War-dated manuscript DS, signed “Jno Sullivan,” one page, 9.25 x 7.5, January 10, 1779. Pay order to the paymaster of the Army for the payment of “Capt. Thomas Clouston Forty Dollars.” Signed at the conclusion by Sullivan and countersigned by several others. Document has been professionally inlaid to a 13.5 x 9.5 off-white sheet. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered moderate toning, and light paper loss to left edge. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
