Football executive (1895–1959) who served as NFL commissioner from 1945 until his death. TLS, two pages, 7.5 x 10.75, Philadelphia National Football Club letterhead, May 5, 1936. Letter to lineman Forrest McPherson. In part: “I bought the controlling interest in the Philadelphia Eagles and am going to coach the team myself, with my old friend John DaGrossa…I certainly hope that you are planning to play pro football this year…We will start practice on Monday afternoon, August 10th…Each player, as per rule, is required to supply his own shoulder and hip pads, two pair of shoes, one good pair for the games, and one pair to practice, also pants and jersey for practice. Likewise, so there will be no misunderstanding, each player agrees to play four exhibition games, with no pay…Furthermore, the club does not pay transportation to and from Philadelphia, but will pay all expenses for board and lodging when in training, and board, lodging and transportation when the team is on the road.” Scattered toning and trimmed left and right edges, otherwise fine condition.
