Description

“On the occasion of the very last conversation I had with our late President, Mr. McKinley, he described to me the very scene...so vividly that I seemed to have the view directly before me”

Three TLSs to San Francisco Mayor James D. Phelan, each one page, 8 x 10.5, Office of the Admiral letterhead, dated between 1901 and 1903. Earliest letter, in part: “I have received from your office a clipping…relative to the monument which it is proposed to build at San Francisco, to commemorate the victory of the American Navy at the battle of Manila Bay. It has given me the greatest pleasure, as one of the nineteen hundred persons in the naval service who participated in that battle, to learn of this recognition to be shown to them.” The second, in part: “I have to acknowledge the receipt…of a photograph of the scene at the breaking of ground for the monument…I shall always cherish it highly, particularly because, on the occasion of the very last conversation I had with our late President, Mr. McKinley, he described to me the very scene showed in the picture, and, as was so usual with him, described it so vividly that I seemed to have the view directly before me.” In overall very good condition, with intersecting folds, and moderate overall foxing, soiling, and dampstaining.
