Robert Anderson

Union general (1805–1871) who commanded three United States forts: Castle Pinckney, Fort Moultrie, and Fort Sumter. In the face of South Carolina’s imminent secession, Anderson refused a formal demand for his surrender and in the early morning hours of April 12, 1861, Fort Sumter was bombarded, and the Civil War began. Partly-printed DS, one page, 7.5 x 9.5, September 30, 1861. Anderson appoints James B. Alexander “Commissary of Subsistence with rank of Captain of Kentucky Volunteers.” Signed at the conclusion by Anderson and Brigadier General commanding. In very good condition, with scattered light creases and toning, and some mirroring of ink along bottom. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
