Description

“The trip undertaken without a reliable sober captain would be extraordinarily dangerous”

ALS, one page, lightly-lined both sides, 8 x 12.25, no date. Letter to a gentleman regarding an impending trip to South America. In part: “The boats of which you inclosed pictured are too large and expensive…a smaller boat would be better for my party of five…I must have a reliable captain and a good interpreter to accompany me…I shall be very much interested in the country and expect to write extensively, but I shall not have time to be entertained, much as I would like to avail myself of the hospitality for which South Americans are famous. I want to spend all available time in the wilds…Major Hills, author of the Golden River, wrote me personally that the trip undertaken without a reliable sober captain would be extraordinarily dangerous.” Grey also signed with his initials below a postscript, and made an ink correction to the first page. In very good condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds (partial separation to top of vertical fold), toning along folds and borders, and a few small edge tears. RR Auction COA.
