American showman (1847–1906) best known as a partner in Barnum and Bailey’s circus. TLS signed “J. A. Bailey,” one page, 8.25 x 11, ornate, information-laden, and visually striking Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth letterhead, January 8, 1900. Letter to his landlord. In part: “Enclosed please find my check for quarters rent of my residence No 24 West Kensington Gardens…I trust you will pardon the delay in sending this as I have been in America and only returned home on Saturday last.” Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a few creases, and some light toning to bottom edge, otherwise fine condition.
