Supreme Court justice who served from 1845 to 1872 (1792–1873). Two items: original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Nelson in profile, signed at the bottom of the image in black ink, “Samuel Nelson”; and an ALS signed “S. Nelson,” one page, 3.75 x 6, circa 1870. In full: “Enclosed you will find the autographs of Judges Taney & Chase. I think I can get President Lincoln’s, and Grant’s at Washington for you.” In overall fine condition, with slightly trimmed edges to the letter (affecting the end of the date), and a skinned back to the carte-de-visite.
