Crewman of the Monitor. ALS signed “John Driscoll 1st Class fireman, U.S.S. Monitor, March 9th 1862,” one page, lightly-lined, 8 x 10, March 6, 1916. Letter concerning the battle of the Monitor and Merrimac. In full: “Your note of recent date to hand asking me to write a few words on the Monitor and Merrimac Fight. As your request is a reasonible [sic] compared with the maney [sic] that are unreasonible [sic]. I will say that the Monitor arrived at Hampton Roads about 9 o’clock on Saturday Night March 8, 1862. The Merrimac had retired for the night after destroying two of our best ships and ready and able to destroy the balance of the fleet. The next morning and the appearance of the Monitor did not inspire much confidence.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a uniform shade of mild toning. RR Auction COA.
