William P. Carlin

Union general (1829–1903) who commanded brigades at the Battle of Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge. War-dated ALS signed “W. P. Carlin, Col 38th Ills., Comdg Post,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 9, December 14, 1861. Letter to the adjutant general of the US Army. In full: “I hereby certify that Lieut. Charles W. Purcell of Gen. Fremont’s Artillery Corps has been on duty at this Post since the 4th day of October 1861, to this date and that he has performed his duties as an officer of artillery both faithfully and efficiently, and in my opinion should be paid according to his Commission as 1st Lieutenant.” Intersecting folds, two through single letters of signature, a few ink spots to signature, and some light mirroring of ink along bottom of page, otherwise fine condition.
