Charles H. Tompkins

Union officer (1830–1915) who was the first Union officer to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for valor in action at the Battle of Fairfax Court House, although he was not awarded the medal until 1893. War-dated LS signed “Cha. H. Tompkins,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 10, Assistant Quarter-Master’s Office letterhead, October 13, 1863. Letter to Captain P. P. Pitkin. In part: “I have taken the liberty of erasing eight Field Desks from your Invoices of the 24th ult. These desks were not rec’d by me—probably went to Capt. Hartz A. Q. M.” Letter has been inlaid to a slightly larger off-white sheet. In fine condition. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
