American politician (1814–1869) who served as secretary of war in the cabinets of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. LS, as secretary of state, one page, lightly-lined, 7 x 9.5, June 8, 1863. Letter which accompanied sent regulations. In full: “The following Regulations for the Subsistence Department of the Army having been approved by the President, he commands that they be published for the government of all concerned and that they be strictly observed. Nothing contrary to the tenor of these present regulations will be enjoined or allowed in any part of the forces of the United States by any commander whatsoever.” In fine condition, with two slightly trimmed edges.
