Joseph B. Smith

US naval officer (1826–1862) who was killed in action while in acting-command of the USS Congress when she was destroyed by the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia. Rare original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Smith in uniform, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Jos. Smith, Rear Adml.” Published by Gardner of Washington. In fine condition, with clipped corners and trimmed edges (not affecting the image or signature). Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
