Just after capturing Atlanta, Thomas offers “a collection of trophies from the Enemy’s works around this place, to be disposed of at your Fair”

Union general (1816–1870) whose most decisive victory earned him the sobriquet ‘Rock of Chickamauga.’ ALS signed “Geo. H. Thomas, Maj. Gen’l U. S. V.,” one page, 5 x 8, Atlanta, September 14, 1864. Letter to Charles E. Allen, president of the Fair committee. In part: “I have directed my Qr. Master to send you a collection of trophies from the Enemy’s works around this place, to be disposed of at your Fair.” In fine condition, with a light block of toning to the lower border. Accompanied by an unsigned original carte-de-visite portrait of Thomas in uniform. Thomas’s Army of the Cumberland played a key role in the Atlanta Campaign, and the city had fallen to the Union just two weeks prior to this letter, on September 2. RR Auction COA.
