Isaac Israel Hayes

Arctic explorer (1832–1881) who commanded Satterlee Hospital in Philadelphia during the Civil War. Civil War–dated partly-printed DS, signed “I. I. Hayes,” one page, 7.5 x 9.75, August 15, 1864. Assistant Quartermaster General’s Office hospital transfer document for transport of George Borman, granting a “furlough from Satterlee Hospital, Philad’a, Pa.” Approved vertically to the left side by Hayes as a surgeon in charge of the hospital. In very good condition, with various horizontal storage folds (one passing through a single letter of the signature), some paper loss and tears to the upper corners, and creasing to borders.
