Sentencing a Royal Marine for “behaving in a most violent and insubordinate manner”

Manuscript DS, signed “Victoria,” one page, 3.5 x 9, May 31, 1864. Document concerning the court-martial and sentence of Private John Smith of the Royal Marines. In part: “Having been tried by a general court martial for behaving in a most violent and insubordinate manner towards a Sergeant and Corporal of Royal Marines, his superior officers…Your Majesty may be pleased to approve this sentence, and that the said John Smith may undergo a punishment of penal servitude for a term of seven years.” Sealed with three crisp and complete Royal Navy–stamped red wax seals on the reverse. In fine condition, with expected document wear. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
