William Preston

Virginia politician who served as secretary of the Navy under Zachary Taylor (1805–1862). Partly-printed LS signed “Wm. Ballard Preston,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, Navy Department letterhead, December 20, 1849. Letter ordering John R. Wilde of Georgia to “proceed to Annapolis…for the purpose of undergoing the examinations contemplated in the accompanying extract from the ‘Plan for a Naval School.’” Second adjoining page bears a printed excerpt regarding admissions requirements. In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds and scattered spots of toning. RR Auction COA.
