Union general (1824–1886) who distinguished himself in the Battle of Gettysburg and later commanded Custer and the 7th Cavalry against the Cheyenne in the disastrous 1867 campaign known as ‘Hancock’s War.’ ALS signed “Winf’d S. Hancock,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 5 x 8, April 30, 1877. Letter to the Louisiana State Superintendent of Education. In part: “Colonel S. F. Chalfin proposes to make application for the position of Superintendent of the Military School of the State of Louisiana and has requested me to give him a letter to you.
