Regretfully declining his invitation to a “reception of Mr. Chief Justice Waite”

Jurist (1803–1881) who served as attorney general under James K. Polk and went on to serve as a Supreme Court Justice from 1858 until his death. Third-person ALS signed in the text “Mr. Justice Clifford,” one page, 5 x 8, Washington, March 2, 1874. Response to an invitation. In part: “Mr. Justice Clifford presents his respects to the committee representing the alumni of Yale College in this city, and regrets to say that circumstances beyond his control will prevent him from being present at their reception of Mr. Chief Justice Waite.” In fine condition.
