Description

Pioneering plastic surgeon writes of a “graft”

First surgeon to devote his entire practice to plastic surgery. His method of skin grafting is known today as the ‘Davis graft.’ Partial ALS, one page, 8.25 x 5.25, personal letterhead, no date. Final page of a longer letter reads, in part: “complete takes, that is ¾ or over, & the majority were entirely healed when discharged—4 in 6 cases about ½ the graft took, & in 3 cases only a few islands took. The failures all followed wound infections.…The sloughing of the tip of the axillary flap seemed to have little or no effect on the healing of the graft—Should you require any more detailed report I shall be glad to give it to you—Hoping the above will be of use to you.” Two vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, a couple of lightly trimmed edges, and a stamp to top edge, otherwise fine condition.
