Description

Extremely rare letter from the African-American arctic explorer

African-American explorer (1866–1955) who was a member of Peary’s expedition to the North Pole in 1909; whether they actually reached the target destination remains a long-argued point of history. Neatly penned ALS signed “Matthew A. Henson,” one page, 5 x 6.5, New York, May 12, 1929. Letter to an admirer. In part: “Thank you for the kind expressions…I hope the climate of Virginia will be the means of restoring you to perfect health.” In fine condition. Difficult to find in any format, this is the only Henson ALS we have ever offered and one of just a handful we have seen. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
