Description

Spectacular and beautifully-detailed original illustration for Drury’s 1904 novel

Amazing original illustration for The Peradventures of Private Pagett by Major W. P. Drury of the Royal Marine Light Infantry. The gouache, charcoal, and white highlight illustration done on a 9.5 x 14.25 art board is signed along the bottom in black artist’s pencil, “Arthur Rackham 04,” and was one of just eight illustrations in the book, this one appearing opposite page 154. Penciled on the reverse in an unknown hand is the illustration’s caption, “’Which division o’ Marines do you belong to?’ he asks.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a photocopy of the illustration from the book. Such intricate and identifiable works from Rackham are quite uncommon. RR Auction COA.
