Handwritten endorsement, signed as president, “Woodrow Wilson,” at the bottom of a one-page TLS to Wilson from Harry Garfield, the United States Fuel Administrator, 6.25 x 8, July 31, 1918. Garfield writes, in part: “I respectfully request that the sum of $100,000, from the appropriation National Security and Defense, be allotted to the United States Fuel Administration for the payment of emergency printing to be done outside of the Government Printing Office…as I may deem necessary for the proper conduct of the business of the administration.” Endorsed at the bottom, “Approved and authorized, Woodrow Wilson.” In very good condition, with scattered toning, a diagonal crease to top left, and a paperclip impression to top edge. Although the exact purpose of the request is unknown, at the time of this letter Garfield’s main jobs were to set and enforce the price of coal, and implement daylight savings time in an effort to conserve coal consumption.
