Father of President U. S. Grant (1794–1873). Handwritten endorsement, signed “J. R. Grant,” at the conclusion of an LS, one lightly-lined page, 6.75 x 11.75, September 26, 1869, recommending a gentleman for a position at the post office. Grant writes in support of another endorsement, “I do not know Mr. Bagley, but know Dr. Brasher; and can safely endorse him, & his statements.” In very good condition, with multiple horizontal folds with slight separations, scattered toning and soiling, toned tape remnant to the lower border, and ink notation identifying Grant’s signature.
