Description

Original Zorach sketches from Lewis Mumford’s 1957 Columbia lecture

Sculptor, painter, printmaker, and writer (1887-1966). Two original vintage pencil sketches of Lewis Mumford by Zorach on the reverse of an 8.5 x 11 sheet bearing a seating list for a table. The sketches are two bust-length portraits of Mumford and a small drawing of his hand. Beneath one sketch Zorach has written, “Lewis Mumford speaking at conference on The Role of a University in the Creative Arts—Nov. 13th, 1957—drawn by Wllm Zorach.” On the reverse of the sheet is another pencil sketch of a man identified by Zorach as James Johnston Sweeney. Accompanied by a short ALS, signed “Bill Zorach, one page, 6.5 x 10, personal letterhead, November 14, 1957. Zorach sends a short letter to Mumford, in full: “I thought you might like to have this as a souvenir of the conference yesterday at Columbia University.” Sketches are in fine condition, with a central vertical fold to sheet, staple hole to lower left, and some light creasing and soiling. Letter also rates fine, with a central vertical fold and some light mirroring of ink. Scarce original works from an uncommon American sculptor. RR Auction COA.
