Politician (1787–1863) who served as governor of Kentucky, and attorney general under Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore. ALS signed “J. J. Crittenden,” one page, 8 x 10, August 9, 1838. Letter of introduction to bank president Nicholas Biddle. In part: “I have known Mr. Samuel long & well—He is a gentleman, every inch of him—a gentleman of the most perfect truth, integrity, and honor.” Second integral sheet bears an address panel filled out in Crittenden’s hand, and letter bears docketing in an unknown hand to the upper right. Intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), light scattered soiling, and a mounting strip to left border, otherwise fine condition.
