Union naval officer (1803–1865) who made significant contributions to the modernization of the US Navy, despite being blamed for the Union’s failure at Charleston. Scarce and desirable original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite bust portrait of Du Pont in uniform by F. Gutekunst of Philadelphia, signed and inscribed on the reverse in black ink, “To Mrs. Breese, from her humble servant, S. F. Du Pont.” Mount bears an 1862 copyright notice in the lower border.
