The Confederacy’s first secretary of state presents a portrait to his boss, and bitter rival, Jefferson Davis.

Confederate political leader, officer in the Civil War, and the Confedracy’s first secretary of state (1810–1885). Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by Anderson of Richmond, signed in the lower border in black ink, “R. Toombs.” Also signed and inscribed on the reverse, “For Mr. Jefferson Davis, S. C. R. Toombs.” Some light spotting to image and some light soiling to reverse, lightly affecting signature and inscription, as well as some small mounting remnants, otherwise fine condition.
