French republican statesman (1838-1882) who helped direct the defense of France during the Franco-German War of 1870–71. Uncommon original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by A. Liebert of Paris, signed on the reverse in black ink, “L. Gambetta.” In fine condition, with pencil notation mentioning “Goodspeed” in bottom border, and some light toning and pencil remnants to reverse. Gambetta is rare in any form. RR Auction COA.
