Union general (1831–1906) who served as army commander in Sherman’s Atlanta campaign and who later became general-in-chief of the army. TLS signed “J. M. In full: “I thank you sincerely for your kind note of congratulation, and am complimented by your desire to have a likeness of that new uniform, which I suppose I will have to don after awhile. I will be glad to send you a copy of the photograph when I get one taken.” Central vertical and horizontal folds (vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), and a spot of soiling to the lower border, otherwise fine condition.
