Percival Drayton

Union navy officer (1812–1865) who commanded naval forces against Confederate forts defended by his brother Thomas F. Drayton in the capture of Port Royal, South Carolina in 1861. Two items: one Civil War–dated original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Drayton in uniform by Brady’s National Photographic Portrait Galleries of New York, signed in the lower border in black ink, “P. Drayton, Capt. US Navy,” and on the reverse, “P. Drayton, Captain US Navy, Jan’y 18, 1865”; and one partly-printed DS signed “P. Drayton,” one page, 8.25 x 2.5, September 1, 1865, a receipt for a payment of $127.19. In overall fine condition, with silvering to dark areas of the carte-de-visite image and a revenue stamp affixed to the reverse. RR Auction COA.
