Navy midshipman during the Civil War (1848–1937) who went on to marry William T. Sherman’s daughter and held several presidential appointed ambassador posts. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by Gutekunst of Philadelphia, signed on the reverse in black ink, “Your true friend, A. M. Thackara, Mid.
