Description

Robert Sanford Foster

Union general (1834–1903) who played a prominent role in the siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign. After the war he served as a member of the commission which tried the Lincoln Conspirators. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by P. S. Ryder of Indianapolis, signed and inscribed on the reverse in black ink, “To my friend, Col. A. S. Tollanbee, R. S. Foster, Brig Genl.” In fine condition, with some spots of mild discoloration to front as well as small pencil notations. RR Auction COA.
