Industrialist, merchant, and ardent abolitionist (1809–1867) who helped establish stations for the Underground Railroad and financially supported John Brown. He played a key role in the Union army as a recruiter for black soldiers, helping to enlist over 13,000 men. Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Stearns in uniform by J. W. Hurn of Philadelphia, signed at the bottom of the image in black ink, “Truly, Your friend, Geo. L.
