Description

Lorenzo Thomas

Controversial army officer (1804–1875) who did not get along well with Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton; President Johnson attempted to replace Stanton with Thomas without support of Congress, which was the reason behind his impeachment. Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite bust portrait of Thomas in uniform by F. Gutekunst of Philadelphia, signed at the bottom in black ink, “L. Thomas, Bvt. Major General and Adjutant General, U. S. A.” In very good condition, with light scattered soiling, an ink stamp to the lower border, and moderate irregular adhesion to the signature. RR Auction COA.
