Inscribed to “Mrs. Maj. Gen’l McClellan”

American military officer and lawyer (1827–1905) who rose to the rank of brigadier general. Wistar was wounded at Antietam and later led troops at Drewry’s Bluff in May 1864; held largely responsible for the Union defeat there, he was relieved of his command two days later. Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Wistar in uniform by Wenderoth & Taylor of Philadelphia, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Compliments of I. J. Wistar,” and signed and inscribed on the reverse, “Mrs. Maj. Gen’l McClellan, with the compliments of I. J. Wistar.” Scattered toning and soiling, and the signatures a few shades light, otherwise fine condition. RR Auction COA.
