Handwritten telegram, in pencil, signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 8.5 x 5.5, Departmental Telegraph Lines letterhead, no date. Garfield telegrams Mr. Helm, in full: “Do you print a Record next Monday? Why not put our Speeches in that? Answer—.” Signed at the conclusion, “J. A. Garfield,” and also signed “Lamar.” Lamar was a Democratic Representative from Mississippi who, after serving the Confederacy in the Civil War, returned to Washington to hold positions in both the House and Supreme Court. Central vertical fold, small hole to center of page, and uniform toning, otherwise fine condition.
