American jurist (1792–1873) who served on the Supreme Court from 1845 to 1872. ALS signed “S. Nelson,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 8, Cooperstown, July 13, 1862. Letter to Edwin Wallace Stoughton. In part: “I have been in the burnt district since I left your city with the exception of one week in Canandaigua. Shall close these out door labors before I leave…Have erected, and in the process of erection 4 buildings, pulled down 2 and removed 2, which involved in the widening of our street.” Intersecting folds, a slight brush to the main text, and mild mirroring to ink, otherwise fine condition.
