Confederate general (1807–1891) who, when Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, resigned his commission as a brigadier general in the regular army—the highest-ranking US officer to do so. ALS signed “J. E. Johnston,” one page, lightly-lined, 5.5 x 8.75, December 7, 1877. Letter to a gentleman. In part: “Please send me by express the books mentioned in your recent note…Dunlop’s History of Fiction…Browne’s Highland Clans…Wordsworth’s Greece.” In fine condition, with mild scattered creases and a fingerprint to the lower border.
