“Have you had some misfortune of which I am not aware? Your closing words ‘Very sadly yours’ cause me to be apprehensive”

French composer (1818–1893) known for his opera, Faust, and for his composition of ‘Ave Marie.’ ANS in French, signed “Ch. Gounod,” on one of his 4 x 2.25 personal calling cards, no date. Note to a friend reads, in full (translated): “Here is the photograph. But, have you had some misfortune of which I am not aware? Your closing words ‘Very sadly yours’ cause me to be apprehensive.” Some soiling and surface loss to right edge, not affecting text, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite of Gounod by Ch. Reutlinger of Paris. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
