Benjamin Butler

American military officer, lawyer, and politician (1818–1893) whose strict administration of New Orleans following the Union occupation in 1862 made him one of the most controversial figures of the Civil War. ALS signed “Benj. F. Butler,” one page, 8 x 10, The Chemical Gold and Silver Ore Reducing Company letterhead, January 18, 1866. Letter to a lawyer. In part: “My friend…of the New Orleans bar will give you a new version of the…evidence…please hear his story and see what can be done. I would give much money personally for the evidence…Go on with the settlement.” Intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), and light scattered toning, otherwise fine condition.
