In part: “Our friends are all well & the Yankees all left, but I suppose we will have more shortly. If we could get rid of the Freedman’s Bureau, we could probably do much better. They demoralize ever Negro in the country who will not work. If the North wants Tobacco & Cotton they had best let us manage our own offices in our own way.” Intersecting folds, scattered toning, and a few small edge separations, otherwise very good condition. The Freedman’s Bureau’s purpose was to provide assistance to displaced former slaves in the Southern states for a period of one year. A great content letter written from a southerner to a northerner, referencing the Lincoln-initiated Freedman's Bureau, with negative sentiments mirroring those of President Johnson’s investigatory committees.
