Financier and philanthropist (1807–1888) who helped obtain funding for Samuel Morse’s telegraph wire from Washington to Baltimore, and later served as the president of Western Union. Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Sibley seated, by Charles D. Fredricks of New York, signed in the lower border in black ink.
