Hiram Sibley

Financier and philanthropist (1807–1888) who helped obtain funding for Samuel Morse’s telegraph wire from Washington to Baltimore, and later served as the president of Western Union. Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Sibley seated, by Charles D. Fredricks of New York, signed in the lower border in black ink. In very good condition, with light scattered foxing and toning, silvering to dark areas of the image, and mounting remnants to reverse. RR Auction COA.
